Update From Erica Esparza, This Semester’s Archer Fellow
The semester is going great! My internship is with the Washington Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights and Urban Affairs. We took a White House tour on October 5th, which was very awesome. We have met with Kevin Brady, the chairman of the House and Ways Committee, which was wonderful as well as experiencing the large committee room and its history. I have done some volunteering during my time here, first with Carecen, which is a Central American Resource Center, a non-profit organization that offers low cost immigration legal services and seeks to foster the comprehensive development of the Latino community in Washington D.C. Secondly, I volunteered for a Texas Exes event called “Longhorns on the Hill” where we spent the day on the hill speaking with Texas congressmen/congresswomen advocating for higher education and Tier One research on the federal level. During this event, I met former quarter back and Texas alum Vince Young, Senator Ted Cruz, Texas Congressmen John Carter, and Texas Congressmen Henry Cuellar. I also worked as a volunteer for a phone bank in the Democratic Party for Senator Hillary Clinton. On October 18, 2016 I will be present on the south lawn of the white house at the arrival ceremony of Italian prime minister Matteo Renzi, which will be the last foreign head of state to be welcomed by the Obama Administration. Hoping to see the President up close at this event! I had the privilege to meet with Chairman Bill Archer on three different occasions, in which, I had one on one time with he and his lovely wife to discuss my future, my family, and my time at UTPB. As of right now, it has been an experience to remember, a once in a lifetime opportunity! There is still more time left in this semester to experience and the uncertainty of who I will meet or what type of history I can be a part of is limitless. I look forward to it with great anticipation!
